Microbiological induced corrosion (MIC) is initiated or accelerated by microorganisms such as bacteria or fungi. These organisms produce corrosive by-products (metabolite) that can attack metals and create localized corrosion, often resembling pitting.
Key Properties of Microbiological Induced Corrosion
- Initially appears as pitting corrosion
- Commonly caused by Sulfate Reducing Bacteria (SRB) that live in anaerobic conditions generating sulfide that precipitates as iron sulfide
- Can also be caused by sulphur oxidizing bacteria that live in aerobic conditions generating pH conditions as low as 0.6
- Growth is optimized in stagnant (no flow) conditions between 25-45°C (77-115°F)

- Storage tanks
How to Control Microbiological Induced Corrosion?
MIC may be controlled in a variety of ways, including:
- Protective coatings
- Regular cleaning
- Biocide treatment
- Cathodic protection
