Impact Wear

Impact abrasion occurs when high hardness particles of high density strike a surface at such velocity that the surface cannot adequately absorb the force applied. In this case the wearing of the surface is due more to fragmentation or fracturing of the surface itself as opposed to the particle. This can lead to excessive work hardening and/or stress fatigue cracking of the surface as opposed to a gradual wearing away as in erosion and sliding abrasion.

Key properties of Impact Abrasive Wear:

  • Small to large particles
  • Medium to high density of impacting particles
  • Moderate to high load
  • Moderate to high velocity
  • High angle of impingement

Typically seen on Chutes, Hoppers, Deflector plates.
