Stress Corrosion Cracking – What is it?

Stress corrosion cracking is the formation of cracks due to the combined effects of a corrosive environment and tensile stress. The metal may appear largely unaffected by corrosion, yet cracks can grow and eventually lead to unexpected failure.

Key Properties of Stress Corrosion Cracking

  • Is the combined effect of a corrosive environment, susceptible material and a tensile stress.
  • Classic examples are caustic embrittlement of steel and season cracking of brass.
  • Stress may come from a number of different sources: applied, residual, thermal or welding.
