Taber Wear is a measure of a coating’s ability to resist surface wear caused by repeated abrasion. It is commonly used to evaluate the durability and wear resistance of protective coatings exposed to mechanical contact during service.

Why is the Taber Wear Test Important?

How is the Test Performed?

  • The specimen is subjected to 1000 abrasion cycles.

The coating is weighed before and after testing, and the material loss is determined.

What Does the Result Mean?

The result is typically reported as weight loss in milligrams (mg).

  • Lower weight loss indicates better abrasion resistance and higher durability.
  • Higher weight loss indicates the coating wears away more easily under abrasive conditions.

Example

A result of 20 mg weight loss after 1000 cycles indicates significantly greater wear resistance than a coating showing 100 mg weight loss under the same test conditions.
